Exploring Mcleod : The Atrractions

Yes you are finally there and you have hotel too ! Food on every corner where the eye rolls. Whats next? Well grab a backpack and move out to explore the major attractions !
What all not to miss !

1. Walking up from the main square, about a kilometer away you find another hustle bustle area, with buses parked and hay wire tourists checking in hotel. This confusion of people moving in and out, confirm you are near Bhagsu water falls. Bhagsu falls has almost as many tourists as His Holy Dalai Lama temple. Also, Bhagsunath temple is also an attraction accompanied by the falls the main attraction, which is starting point of the way to falls.

As you cross the temple, (please do visit the temple if you are a devotee), you see the falls, and people all over it, there steep narrow pedestrian roads, with security iron railing lead you to the top of the falls, on way you will find various off road paths to falls, when you find a free spot, clomp down and relax, smoke, drink, what ever you want. It is actually a chilling spot. (Please don't litter the place and stop others too).

You will also find a number of cafes on the way. Of which Shiva cafe is very famous. (More on Shiva cafe in other posts)

Bhagsu Falls

2. Dharamkot and Bhagsu trek

Now here is a secret very few people know, and may be many tourists know that, no one likes to share with the naive and the novice. most tourists would go climb down from Bhagsu falls back to the main square, den take another way to Dharamkot and Bhagsu village. If you may ask any local resident or tourists guide they will lead you to the same route. But there is a shorter and more beautiful way to go to Dharamkot.

Actually, when you come back to the main square you are usually too tired to walk up again to Dharamkot, most people take a taxi service which charges INR 100 for a trip to dharamkot, well stuff as many as you can in that 100 bucks, as it is just a kilometer from main square.

But the better way to reach dharamkot is via bhagsu village which you will anyways go from dharamkot to see the cafes and other events buzzing around in bhagsu.

German Bakery

So while, you trek along the falls, on way to shiva cafe, you will find a diversion, a path leading along the water pipe lines, just follow that and you will discover a village and way to bhagsu. After that all paths are well marked.

3. Tsuglagkhang Buddhist Temple, Dalai Lama's Temple, Mcleodganj
The Namgyal Monastery is named after the original Namgyal monastery in Lhasa, Tibet. This is where novice monks are trained under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The monastery has nearly two hundred monks and the younger ones study the major texts of the Buddhist Sutras and Tantras. Buddhist philosophy, debating, the making of butter sculptures, torma offerings, and sand mandalas, the playing of various ritual musical instruments, ritual chanting and dances are a part of the curriculum. At the same time, they are taught modern courses. Sections are off limits to visitors, but in the evenings it is quite a sight watching the monks debate with stylistic moves and sharp claps as they make a point.

The Tsuglakhang is the main hall where prayers are conducted. This is encircled by large prayer wheels. Within are larger than life images of Shakyamuni Buddha, Avalokiteshwara and Padmasambhava - the latter two were leading lights of Trans Himalayan Buddhism. The walls of this large assembly chamber, are adorned with 'thanka' paintings, that are unique to the culture and depict saints and deities and are executed according to strict codes of iconography. Even if the understanding is minimal, the daily chant of prayers in this hall and the accompanying music has a mesmerising effect. Its said that turning the prayer wheels gives positive energy as the prayer inscribed on the wheels are enchanted.

Just off this is the Kalachakra Temple. This is open to the public as a place of pilgrimage and is where public teachings are given by the Dalai Lama. This is also the venue for religious activities – like the construction of various sand mandalas. The architecture and murals of the temple also serve as a representation of Tibet's rich spiritual and artistic tradition. At the centre of the main mural, is a large painting of Shakyamuni Buddha ; this is surrounded by the 722 deities of the Mandala. On either side are images of the Fourteen Dalai Lamas and the lineage Gurus.

The residence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama is also located here and this obviously this is off limits to visitors.

4. Dal Lake
Walking 2Kms, westward to Mcleodgang you reach Dal lake. Its a small lake and though you will be disappointed, let your self loose and explore the serene and beautiful surroundings.

3. Triund

The USP of Mcleodgang are the Triund rages which are always white with snow covered all season long. The Triund trek is the shortest trek to any glacier in India, it is an easy level too. The unpolluted air and mesmerizing environment will take your breath away.

4. St. John Church

A spooky church in bewilderedness  ! But really beautiful surrounding. The gardens and flowers are beautiful.

It is located 1-2 Kms from McLeod main square.

other Attractions

1. Tibet Museum.
2. Vipassana and Tushita meditation centers.
3. Hanuman ka Tibba Trek
etc.

McLeod Bars and Bitches -part 1

BARS!

Yes this little town has an amazing night life! Though most of the hotels have amazing rooftop cafes which are filled with tourists enjoying nice weather and view with booze, you always have night clubs and bars all over.
I would advise you to have you meal before 11, to avoid complication. While my stay in late June, it rained profusely, there was some electricity problems and we couldn't find lunch any where, it was fortunate luck, that the light was back in some time and the cafe open again. (Yes they closed down immediately when the electricity vanished)

Ready to unwind?
Tavern- Yes tavern is making its mark every where

Located on the roof top, Tavern is a great place to be in for a few drinks with friends. Its always been the family kinds(like in Mussorie). Enjoy the cocktails, IMFL and FML here.

X-Cite Bar and Restaurant

This is one of the most well known pubs in Mcleodganj, mainly because it is the only place with a dance floor. It is located in the main square area and has a lot of live music. One can pick from a range of wines and cocktails while enjoying trance, rock and hip-hop music here. Those who love a discotheque need not be disappointed either as the place becomes a discotheque twice in a week. However, only couples are allowed to enter at these times. It also serves Tibetan, Chinese, Continental and Mexican cuisines.  I was here for the league football matches and it was amazing. I had fruit wine, which is a must try. It also serves hukkah, and has ample seating.

Mcllo Bar and Restaurant

If you are looking for a place that serves good beer and wines, Mcllo bar and restaurant is an ideal hangout. This place is popular among both tourists and locals because of its casual atmosphere. The restaurant in this bar also has very good Tibetan and Chinese food. Travelers looking for something different can also try the Israeli, South Indian and Continental dishes.  However, honestly it is too expensive. Do, try some beer with wooden oven pizza.

Roof Top Restaurant and Bar

Located in the Asian Plaza Hotel, this open air restaurant is a great place to enjoy a few quite drinks with family and friends. - Closes @ 11 so not really our cup of whiskey ! :P

Black Magic Club - Stay away from this all guy crowd club. At off season, it is supposed to be much better. Bar rates are way too high. They usually charge a cover charge.

Pool Parlors - If you are a pool and snooker patron, you can enjoy and while away your hours at pool parlors serving chilled beers and snacks. Awesome try! (You will find then down the Jogiwara Lane)

BITCHES -coming up soon ! :P

Find the perfect place to sleep : Hotels

McLeod and surrounding areas have more than 100 hotels and guest houses. Most guest house or hotels are accustomed to only foreigner policy as they stay for longer periods (months or week), hence the tariffs are invariably high for Indians and too cheap for non-indians.

Main square area houses the famous restaurants (Mccalo) and hotels. All roads diverge from this square and you can find Hotels on every road. As logically as possible, the more you are closer to the main square the more you pay. Tariffs are usually above Rs. 2500 + Taxes @ main square.

Honestly if you want to find a budget hotel, please don't search @ TripAdvisor , Yaatra etc or any other stupid sites. Hotels on such websites are usually charging you over the top. I mean you can anyways get a better hotel your own. But still if you are not an explorer and you are there just for the week end. Book it anyway.

My Hotel - Hotel Pink House*
Not more than 100 mts. from the main square, down the Jogibara road you find a lot of hotels in a line. You will also find shopping lanes, temples and eateries all through the road. About 150 mts from the main square and 100 mts down from the Himanchal Bhawan, you find steep stairs going down the, after about 100-150 small and big steps you get to Pink House hotel, which undoubtedly is an experience.
It is run by authentic Kashmiri speaking dude. The owner is very polite and transparent. You will find most of foreigners enjoying meal and coffee on the small lounge with Kashmiri mattress and a bunch of pillows. Like most hotels, it has a rooftop cafe, with awesome view. Not to mention, the rates are very cheap.
I am sure you will enjoy the room service, its makes you feel like a king. :P

Note: Land mark is a shop selling fruit wines and antiques, and you can ask the locals anyway.

An important tip is to always check the available rooms and check for all listed facilities. The best way to find hotel is to take down number from the websites of the hotels. Call them as you reach McLeod, for the room availability. Cheap rooms are usually unavailable.

It is very important to mention that, the big and fancy family hotels usually do not rent out rooms to guys and guy groups. ( I think they want to avoid any rowdiness).

The major disadvantage of my hotels was climbing down the steps. I dint mind that but since, not everyone wants to trek all the time, please do look out for hotels along the road if you are too lazy to climb so much, or you think you will move in and out frequently.

USUAL ROOM RATES 2012
 At main square 2500-3500
Jogiwara Road 800-3500

It is ideal to choose a room of around INR 1100-1500, on this you will have most of the needed facilities.

Finding hotels in Dharamkot

If you are a holiday person, or you want to avoid the crowded city, the best place to live is Dharamkot, just 1.5 km from the main square. Taxis charge 100 bucks, its upto you how many you can stuff in.

Advantages of Dharamkot :
  • scenic beauty
  • cheap hotels
  • surrounded by Israeli and Italian cafes
  • close to bhagsu area which has other good cafes and other live music entertainment
  • it is more hippi and they have lot events going on
Also, Bhagsu fall are equidistant from Dharamkot and Mcleod (.5km :P)

Room rents : You should get good room for about 700-1000. (actually 700 is fair enough)

Please NOTE all the above hotel fares are on short term basis. The longer you stay the cheaper it is.

*Disclaimer : I have no benefit from PINK HOUSE Hotel, I like it so i mentioned it. :)

Mcleod : Travelling from New Delhi

Lets try to keep it simple. I will take the whole route and travel from New Delhi. (Its the capital, give it some credit :P )

Plane
Flights are available trice a week. You get down at Gagal Airport. Take a local taxi to Dharamshala or McLeod.
Gagal Airport - McLeod = Rs. 350-400
Kotwali Bazzar - McLeod = Rs. 120-150
Gaggal Airport to - Dharamsala = Rs. 150-200
Dharamsala - McLeodc= Rs. 120-150

Train
You can reach Pathankot by Train and take a local shared taxi, to save extra bucks for the upcoming adventure.

- Less expensive than Plane.
- Miss out the Chandigarh roads and country side Dhabe
- Faster than road
- Avoid Traffic
- Good for lone travelers

The only good thing about trains is 24 HR on the journey loo ! :P

Note : See the IRCTC site for the train fares.

Car
I feel car is the best way to travel in North India. Its quite economical for four people, if you have a diesel car, with an average of 20-21 Km/Ltr on highways.
Diesel - 2500-3000 (If your diesel on this trip then probably you even go to the loo in your car, get a life)

-Oh honestly there is Dearth of parking space in McLeod and most scenic places dont have parking. ASAP you reach McLeod, search for parking,Hotels will follow, most of McLeod, Bhagsu and Dharamkot are very small and you can leisurely trek every where.
-Car is best way to capture the scenic beauty you will find on the way.

Parking Tips
- When you reach McLeod, they have parking just before the main square.
- This is what we did, this is really good tip
Park @ Himanchal Bhawan (Club House) parking, it is the safest parking and they charge you Rs. 100 a day. and believe me its the safest place to park.
- Inquire for a hotel with parking (Such hotels are bit far from main square and are needlessly expensive)
- If you are going to Dharamkot, you might find odd parking places, try to park in way that it doest not create a menace for others, believe me you are going to see a hell lot of traffic jams there, so i guess the legs are the best transport.

Its almost 500 Km, from New Delhi. And yes it is a fun road trip.
More Details on my McLeod by Road Post.

Bus
You get Volvo coaches from Delhi, Phathankot, Chandigarh etc. It will cost you around Rs.800-1200 from Delhi.
I don't really recommend buses:-
-Unsafe on Hills
-You cant make then stop where you want
-They dont have loo :P
-Too much hustle-bustle

Off to Mcleod

TripMcleod

Delhi --- Chandigarh --- Dharamshala --- McLeodGanj

It was first week of June, when we wanting to escape the Delhi Heat (43 Deg), planned our trip to McLeod. It had been quite confusing though ! Tosh and Kasol, (the paradise for cannabis), and new to our ears or the much sought for McLeod, (amazing food and calmness).

So finally since we had just 2 nights and 3 days in hand we decided to go to McLeod. Hence, the quest for Food, Finance, Freedom and Female began.
One thing I have learned from my Bangkok trip is that the key to a fantabulous trip is Research and Exploration. And yes the travelogues on the blogsites are best for a quick survey of the far off lands. Another quick option is the Ctrl + F , and be specific.

Note: Read everyone and everything. Do what you want. Trust you instinct. Remember its just a guide not rule book.

Hey Travelers

I m trying to post be specific in every post about specific parts of the trips. Hence, I have chaptered the post so that you can save time and look for specific stuff.

Thanks for the read.
regards,
Nish
